Empower

EMPOWERMENT HAS BEEN A COLLECTIVE JOURNEY AT TRANBY.

Tranby has supported Aboriginal and Torres Strait empowerment for 70 years – an almost immeasurable legacy. Much of the public campaigning for an end to Black deaths in custody was coordinated by Tranby. Likewise, struggles for land and the protection of heritage have always been high profile at Tranby. In 1982, Tranby founded one of Australia’s first social enterprises, BlackBooks, a venture that launched the careers of numerous First Nations writers.

COLLECTIVE STRENGTH

At Tranby, empowerment comes from unity. We nurture strength through listening to community and leading with community. Tranby is grounded by Aboriginal ways of knowing, being and doing.

ADVOCACY IN ACTION

For decades, Tranby has been at the forefront of social justice and cultural advocacy – from the bold presence at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy to the Building Bridges Concert, and other initiatives like the Aboriginal Development Unit. Today, we are proud to lead the Alliance of First Nations Education Providers, a collective pushing for sustainable, community-controlled investment.

The Alliance of First Nations' Education Providers (AFNIETP)

The Alliance of First Nations' Independent Education and Training Providers is a national peak body. The purpose of the Alliance is to advance cultural, education, artistic and career pathways for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while maintaining and growing Indigenous knowledge and value for the whole community.

AFNIETP was designed as a community-led action in response to the Australian Government’s consistent de-funding of the Aboriginal-controlled adult education sector. Working together, several organisations are advocating for sustainable investment in Indigenous controlled adult education. These include Tranby (the lead community partner, RTO Code 90492), Tauondi Aboriginal College in Tandanya (Adelaide, RTO Code 2370), Institute of Aboriginal Development (IAD) in Mparntwe (Alice Springs, RTO Code 0167) and NAISDA Dance College on Darkinjung land on Sydney’s Central Coast (RTO Code 5639).
